The untold depths of Ibrahim (AS) & Ismail (AS) — beyond the sacrifice, into the soul of tawakkul, obedience, and raising believers.
وَإِذِ ابْتَلَىٰ إِبْرَاهِيمَ رَبُّهُۥ بِكَلِمَٰتٍ فَأَتَمَّهُنَّAnd when his Lord tested Ibrahim with commands, and he fulfilled them all
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:124
Some stories are told so often they lose their weight. The story of Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) is one we hear every Hajj season — yet most of us have only scratched the surface. Beneath the well-known narrative of a father, a son, and a knife lies one of the most profound teachings in the entire Quran about trust in Allah, raising children with faith, and what true obedience looks like.
This Hajj season, let’s go deeper.
01. The Man Who Was Always Being Tested
Before we arrive at the moment of sacrifice, we must understand the man. Ibrahim (AS) was not tested once — he was tested his entire life. He was thrown into fire for upholding Tawheed. He left his homeland. He smashed the idols of his people. He was separated from his wife and infant son in the middle of a desert.
And yet — every single time — he passed. Not because he was fearless, but because his heart was anchored to Allah. The Quran calls him Khalilullah (the intimate friend of Allah) — a title earned through decades of proving that nothing, not fire, not family, not the most beloved person in the world, could come between him and his Lord.
“Ibrahim didn’t pass the tests because they were easy. He passed them because he trusted the One who gave them.”
— A Reflection on Surah As-Saffat
02. The Dream That Changed History
The command came not through an angel, not through a voice from the heavens — but through a dream. Allah showed Ibrahim (AS) in a vision that he was slaughtering his own son.
For a Prophet, a dream is revelation. For a father, it is the most devastating thing imaginable. But here is where the story becomes extraordinary — Ibrahim (AS) didn’t hide it from Ismail. He went to his son, looked him in the eyes, and said:
يَٰبُنَىَّ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰ فِى ٱلْمَنَامِ أَنِّىٓ أَذْبَحُكَ فَٱنظُرْ مَاذَا تَرَىٰ
O my son, I have seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. So what do you think
Surah As-Saffat 37:102
He asked his son. He consulted him. He gave him the dignity of knowing and the agency to respond. And Ismail (AS) — who was a teenager by most scholarly accounts — replied with words that shook the heavens:
يَٰٓأَبَتِ ٱفْعَلْ مَا تُؤْمَرُ ۖ سَتَجِدُنِىٓ إِن شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰبِرِينَO my father, do what you have been commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, among the patient
Surah As-Saffat 37:102
03. What Tawakkul Actually Looks Like
We speak of tawakkul (complete reliance on Allah) as a spiritual ideal — but Ibrahim and Ismail (AS) showed us what it looks like in practice. It is not passive resignation. It is not emotionless compliance. It is a deeply conscious, fully aware choice to trust Allah even when every human instinct screams otherwise.
Ibrahim (AS) wept. He loved his son with the fierce tenderness of a father who had waited decades for a child. And Ismail (AS) was afraid — but he chose sabr over self-preservation. Both of them walked to the place of sacrifice together, fully knowing, fully trusting. That is tawakkul. Not the absence of fear, but faith that walks with the fear.
🌊Tawakkul is Active, Not Passive
Ibrahim (AS) walked, prepared, and moved forward. He didn't wait for a sign to start. He acted on his trust in Allah.
🤲Surrender is Honourable
Ismail (AS) asked to be tied so his struggle wouldn't distress his father. Even in sacrifice, his concern was for others.
⚡The Test Was the Intention
Allah never intended for Ismail to be killed. He wanted to see if Ibrahim's heart was truly free — and it was.
04. The Parenting Lessons No One Talks About
This story is often read as a test of a father’s faith. But read closely — it is equally a testament to how Ibrahim (AS) raised his son. Ismail (AS) didn’t just happen to be brave and faithful. He was raised that way. And there are lessons in this for every Muslim parent today.
- 💬 Have Honest Conversations with Your Children
Ibrahim (AS) told his son the truth. He trusted his child with reality — and his child rose to meet it. Don’t underestimate your children’s capacity for faith. - 🌱 Plant Iman Before Tests Arrive
Ismail (AS) didn’t develop tawakkul overnight. It was cultivated through years of growing up in a home where Allah was at the centre. - 👂 Ask, Don’t Just Command
“What do you think?” — these four words from Ibrahim (AS) are a masterclass in Islamic parenting. Involving children in decisions builds their ownership of faith. - 🕊️ Model Obedience to Allah Yourself
Children become what they see. Ismail (AS) reflected his father’s relationship with Allah. The most powerful tarbiyah is not what you teach — it’s what you live. - ✨ Teach Children That Hardship Has a Higher Purpose
Ismail (AS) didn’t view the sacrifice as a cruel command. He understood that if Allah willed it, there was wisdom beyond what he could see — and this transforms how children face difficulty.
✦ The Hajj Connection ✦
Every Ritual of Hajj Carries Their Memory
When you perform Hajj, you are not just following a ritual — you are re-enacting the moments of this family’s surrender to Allah. The tawaf around the Ka’bah, which Ibrahim and Ismail (AS) built together. The sa’i between Safa and Marwa, which Hagar ran in desperate trust. The stoning of the Jamarat, where Ibrahim (AS) cast stones at Shaytan. The Qurbani of Eid, commemorating the ram sent in Ismail’s place.
Hajj is not merely a physical journey. It is an annual declaration: we choose obedience over comfort, trust over certainty, Allah over everything.
When you stand at Mina, remember: you are standing where Ibrahim (AS) stood — and you are being asked the same question. What does your heart choose?
05. What Shaytan Fears Most
The stoning of the three Jamarat pillars commemorates a detail often overlooked: on the way to the sacrifice, Shaytan appeared three times to Ibrahim (AS) — and then to Ismail (AS) and Hagar — attempting to create doubt, fear, and hesitation. Each time, they drove him away.
This tells us something profound. Shaytan does not attack people who are comfortable and complacent. He attacks those who are actively moving toward Allah. The stones we throw at Mina are a reminder: when you are on the path of obedience, expect resistance — and meet it with conviction.
“The family of Ibrahim (AS) were tested not because Allah doubted them — but because the world needed to witness what sincere belief looks like.”
— Inspired by the works of Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim
06. The Reward of Total Surrender
When Ibrahim (AS) laid his son down and raised the knife, Allah called out: “O Ibrahim! You have already fulfilled the vision.” A ram was sent from paradise in Ismail’s place. And in that moment, everything changed.
Ibrahim (AS) was given the title of Imam of humanity. The Ka’bah was built. His descendants became Prophets. His legacy became the foundation of three Abrahamic faiths. His story is recited every Hajj, every Eid, by over 1.8 billion Muslims across the earth.
All because he let go. All because he trusted.
When we hold tightly to something — our comfort, our plans, our fears — and Allah asks us to release it, we are standing at our own personal Mina. The question is not whether Allah will replace what we surrender. History has already answered that. The question is: do we trust Him enough to open our hands?
